Emmanuel Onyeachonam

Abstract

The overall purpose of this study was to ascertain current trends in Internet access and multimedia tools utilization among University of Lagos Undergraduates. The research was guided by some questions, like: what multimedia devices are owned by undergraduates of UNILAG; what is the extent of Internet access and use among UNILAG undergraduate students; what is the level of students awareness of multimedia tools and what is the degree of UNILAG undergraduate students participation in multimedia content creation? The survey research method was adopted for this study. Findings from suggest that there is a high level of multimedia devices ownership and Internet access and use among the respondents; majority of the students use their multimedia devices in accessing the Internet. The research further reveals that though the students, to a great extent, are aware and know of multimedia tools on different web platforms, the level to which they participate in creation of real multimedia content is low. It was recommended that more efforts should be geared towards making the youths have their voices heard on the public sphere through training on use of multimedia tools to create contents as citizens.
